Araby - 1914

Araby 남준표 7/10     Araby moved my heart. The boy’s perspective over crush is something familiar, something usual at our age. It could be a impure love of boy in our perspective, but to me, love the boy feels felt something pure. In contrast with the last scene in the story, boy acts himself to be in favor of Mangan’s sister. On the other hand, the other 2 men and a sales woman is love for one’s greed. In my opinion, real love, is something about sacrifice. One sacrificing oneself for each other, one who can rely in hard times is real love.       Love for greed is kind of a human society problem. In state of poverty, one would only be focusing on their survival. But as society grows, it gave us too much. We own more than we need, but we desire more. Each other benefiting for their greed. I’m not saying it is something bad. We all look for the most benefit for oneself.      Araby gave me a mixed feeling on the end, because it is a growing up story. The boy will one day, grow up, and bec

About James Joyce

James Joyce 남준표     James Joyce is a fascinating author to me. To be honest, all those short story authors are quite unique. Living in Korea, most short stories written has plots shown in it. But, in James Joyce and Chekhov’s one, there are things hidden under the story. Sometimes, it was hard, even understanding a character’s act. Maybe the lack of background informations takes a bug portion of this phenomena.     Korean short stories are mostly based on Japanese Imperialism Period, Gap between rich and the poor, old generation vs new generation. But Joyce gives us something slightly different. Corruption of Church, Death, pure vs impure, light, and even more. These unfamiliar things are obstacles making it harder to read. But, these obstacles gives us some points to think. Something more about the fundamentals. For example, about death. We don’t usually think of death as we normally live, but we always wonder what is beyond death. Joyce pulls themes familiar but at the same tome unf

The lady with the dog

The lady with the dog 201043 남준표 1899/12     To me this story was rather boring as we are living in the 21st century. But to speak for the people who might have first read the kind of a story might have been felling weird, because it is something out of our common sense, like we don’t usually fall in love with person who is married, But at the same time, they would be so curious of how the story will progress. Me too, felt the same when I watched these types of Dramas. Also, the format, divided in many sections were interesting.      I focused on how the relation will lead on. First, the protagonist have stereotypes  toward woman. To me the relationship will tear down soon, and they will return to their life as it used to be. According to Martin Heidegger langeweile is a feeling we feel when we lose something. Thing we usually dont take a big care will change if you lose that, arousing the sense of emptyness. langeweile will be felt to the too people as they leave their family. Everyt
The Student - Anton Chekhov, 1894 남준표     The story was very interesting in that we can find the Hero’s journey in such a short story. The most interesting part to me was the third part, refusal of the call. In the story, protagonist refuses the call of adventure, not by his own will, but by his feeling that he doe not want to go home. I was a bit confused about considering this as a refusal, but, the decision was made by the protagonist. He did not want to go home, because of many reasons, he was hungry but there were no food to eat. In my opinion, there was a quick, a real short refusal of the call, which suddenly changed, and lead Ivan to his adventure.      What made me astonished was how Chekhov wrote this story, because it is really abnormal. A boy on a journey and achieves two women crying. To me I can’t understand the purpose of this short story.  Maybe that was because of my lack of understanding of how Russia was going on at that time, maybe because I lacked background infor
A SOUND OF THUNDER - BY RAY BRADBURY, 1952    남준표     It is sure a interesting story to read, but in some aspects, it’s boring. The worst part was that the ending could be easily predicted. In the first part, the story  introduces unneeded informations such as who will be the president, and stuff. In addition,  mentioning people to be careful about changing the future during the expedition gives us a slight view of what will the ending be like.  It would have been a good plot twist without these evidences. When most of informations are given, it makes the ending predictable, which makes readers get loose. On the other hand, making readers thinking about how situations are going on keeps readers on track.      I really enjoyed the concept of Time Traveling. It gave me a feeling of watching an good episode of “Doctor Who”. It is really amazing to write about stories like this at that time, as subjects like these were recently popular. It would have been hard for the author to imagine th
